Weakening of LGBT-critical resolutions: tight budgets instead of real insight in Poland

In Poland, two administrative regions have weakened LGBT-critical resolutions again. In the move, however, anti-discrimination efforts played less than EU funds.

The Heiligkreuz region started last week, now two further administrative districts have weakened or overturned LGBT-critical resolutions: the Lublin region and even the Subcarpathian region, which is considered to be particularly conservative. There the regional parliament, dominated by the PiS party, canceled a resolution against the “spreading of the ideology of the so-called LGBT movement” – and instead adopted a document declaring the district a “region of established tolerance”.

The parliament in the Lesser Poland district around Krakow is also preparing to defuse it after a deletion was initially unsuccessful. The sudden turnaround everywhere is likely to be associated with considerable cuts in funds, which a deputy infrastructure minister recently pointed out: “As a government, we did not recommend these resolutions. As vice minister, I am responsible for the small sectors and suggest that EU fundraising is part of the process the very high anti-discrimination standards are respected. I have sent my letter to all the municipalities because I do not want any doubts to arise here. The decisions should be made more precise because there are many good intentions there, but one or two sentences can change everything. “

Duda: LGBT movement more dangerous than Bolshevism

On the one hand, the various resolutions underline the importance of the family and their protection, but at the same time assume more or less clearly that a so-called LGBT ideology threatens the family and children.

This rhetoric was also an integral part of the PiS party in past election campaigns. And it was also taken up by President Andrzej Duda, who had demonized the ideas of the movement in the election campaign as being even more dangerous than Bolshevism. Now he said in an interview, when asked about the regional withdrawal of the relevant resolutions: “This is about the question of the ideology that began to work in the EU and which one is forcing all member states to adopt, forcing is the right word. Let To put it this way: The most important thing is the family, according to the constitution, it comes first. I am convinced that it should be decisions for the family with its special position. “

Duda’s father Jan, who chairs the district parliament in Malopolska, now called homosexuality to a certain extent “contagious” in an interview; nevertheless, he also supports a shift towards less sharp formulations: “LGBT ideology” is ultimately formulated in a misleading manner.

Hardliners warn against blackmail from Brussels

Not all go; Hardliners in the PiS group warned against bowing to further blackmail from Brussels. And the Krakow Archbishop Marek Jedraszewski, who is known for his own anti-LGBT statements, warned: “Freedom has its price – and that price includes honor. Freedom is not bought for money, because then it is no longer freedom, but enslavement further stages of humiliation of the soul will follow. “

Meanwhile, the well-known Polish LGBT activist Bart Staszewski, who had attracted international attention with a sign campaign “LGBT-free zone”, declared the partial withdrawal of the opposing side a success of his movement. It remained open, however, whether dozens of smaller Polish cities and municipalities would also correct their anti-LGBT statements.

Stazewski disseminated an example of information from an activist in the 3000-strong community on the Lowzwica Duza near Lublin on the Internet. The activist complained in an Internet speech that the resolution had not been overturned at the latest municipal council meeting. The mayor’s attitude cost the municipality 17 million zlotys in funding, which is a quarter of the entire municipal budget.

Is the Polish anti-LGBT campaign collapsing?
