“We were buddies” in the cinema: It works without coal – culture

“Moan” greets “Locke” and “Langer”, then “Locke” is made fun of by his friend because he came too late and then wants to have a smoke before they drive on. The tone is harsh but warm, we are in the Ruhr area. “Locke” and “Langer” (both self-explanatory nicknames) are buddies; they have been working in the same mine for ages. “I actually see Locke more than my wife,” says Langer. When the two of them are standing in the shower after their shift with coal-black faces, one soaps the other’s back.
