Orange’s TV decoder is already a few years old and the operator plans to renew it soon. But this time, Orange could well opt for Android TV, a platform already used by its competitors.
Since its creation, Orange has always favored in-house ecosystems for its services, even when they were developed externally. The TV box OS is a blatant example of this. However, it seems that the incumbent operator is about to change course by turning to Android TV for its next set-top box.
A decoder already seen in Poland
This new decoder is not completely unknown since it has already been marketed in Poland since last fall. Indeed, Orange is offering a TV decoder based on the fabric design of recent Liveboxes, but above all operating under Android TV, a first for the operator.
This strategic choice is not surprising when we know that other operators such as Free, SFR and Bouygues Telecom have already opted for Android TV 12. This platform offers many advantages, particularly in terms of ease of use and wealth of content and apps.
In Poland, it is called Dekoder 4K Multi. HDMI 2.1 and 4K compatible, it maintains the same dimensions as the current box, with Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6 compatibility. Performance should be better, even if few people use an Orange box for gaming.
Although nothing is official yet, it is likely that Orange’s new TV box will be based on Android TV, as is already the case in Poland. This new commercial offer should be revealed on April 20, 2024, the date on which Orange plans to renew its offers.
It is important to note that Orange’s current TV decoder dates back to 2018, which is starting to date, as pointed out MacG. In addition, Orange is preparing an Android TV and tvOS application, which suggests increased compatibility with the different ecosystems.
