“We have lost the reflex to mask ourselves,” warns an infectious disease specialist

“We have had hospitalizations again since last week.” As Covid-19 cases start to rise again, infectious disease specialist Benjamin Davido, who works at the Raymond-Poincaré hospital in Garches, is sounding the alarm. “We thought Covid was buried and above all become a seasonal disease, this is not the case,” he emphasizes on Franceinfo.

Nothing to cheer about as the legislative elections and the Paris Olympics approach. “We will still find ourselves queuing in a somewhat confined manner in polling stations,” he predicts, deploring that tests have “become optional” and that the isolation of patients is “no longer obligatory”.

A 50% jump in one week

“We have lost the reflex, when we are sick, to mask ourselves, and quite simply to screen ourselves to avoid contaminating people and creating clusters,” adds Benjamin Davido.

According to Public Health France, the increase in Covid cases is “increasingly marked”. Visits to emergency rooms jumped by 52% over one week and by 51% at SOS Médecins.
