“We are currently assuming a hostage situation” – Panorama

An armed driver drove a car onto the apron of Hamburg Airport on Saturday evening.

The man broke through a barrier with the car around 8 p.m. and then shot twice, said a federal police spokesman. He also threw two burning bottles out of the vehicle. Flight operations have been stopped. The terminals and planes would be cleared.

There is a child in the car

Federal and state police forces are in action. According to initial findings, no one was injured. According to police, there was also a four-year-old child in the man’s car. It is unclear whether – as initially suspected – there is another child in the vehicle. “We are currently assuming a hostage situation,” the police say. She is in contact with the man. “We have good contact with the perpetrator,” said a police spokeswoman late in the evening. The man is being negotiated in Turkish.

The man’s wife called the police and said that her husband had announced the crime. The man’s motive is said to be unknown to the police.

The airport spokeswoman said six take-offs and 21 landings would normally have been expected between the official closure of the airport at 8:24 p.m. and the end of operations at 11 p.m. The expected flights would come from Hurghada, Agadir, Malaga and Lisbon, among others, it was said. Some of them have already been rerouted and some flights have been canceled. What happens next with air traffic depends on the operational situation.

Hamburg airport had already been closed in October, but at that time because of a threat of attack on a plane from Tehran to Hamburg.
