Watermelon – how to tell if a melon is ripe and sweet

Watch the video: Five tips on how to recognize a sweet watermelon.

Summer is THE time for watermelons.

But how do you recognize a particularly good and sweet watermelon?

You should pay attention to these things:
1. A shapely size

Look for a symmetrical bowler hat – without dents, cuts or bruises. If the watermelon has lumps or bumps, it means it has been watered erratically or got sun.

2. Does the melon have the “right Weight?
Pick up the melon and compare the weight with another melon of a similar size. The heavier, the riper and better the fruit tastes.

3. On the “field spot regard
The bottom of the watermelon should have a yellow spot. At this point the fruit was lying on the ground, ripening in the sun. If there is no spot, or just a very light one, it means the watermelon was harvested too early – and isn’t ripe yet.

4. Knock once, please!
Pick up the watermelon and tap it. With a ripe melon, the sound is brighter and fuller. A deep and dull sound: The watermelon is not yet ripe.

5. The handle reveals a lot

Is the style still green? Then the watermelon was harvested too early and the fruit is probably not yet ripe. A slightly darker, brown handle is better.
