Water buffalo in Brucker Moos – Ebersberg

Heck cattle, Dexter cattle, Konik horses or water buffalo could in future graze areas in the Brucker Moos in the southern district of Ebersberg if the plans of the lower nature conservation authority (UNB) in the district office go according to plan. “Although a large part of the area in the Brucker Moos in the southern district of Ebersberg is in public hands and is extensively managed as grassland, the desired species richness has unfortunately not been achieved in large areas,” the responsible experts explain the background to the planned measures in the heavily drained and agriculturally used bog area.

According to a press release from the district office, large-scale, extensive and nature-friendly grazing of the district’s own land and the compensation and eco-account areas of the communities in the Brucker Moos should increase the ecological value of the area. Together with the landscape conservation association Ebersberg (LPV), the UNB is now looking for farmers who will implement this extensive grazing project in close cooperation with the experts in the authorities and association. The start of grazing is planned for 2023, initially on around 22 hectares. It is planned to expand the grazing area to 34 hectares in 2024 and to the total project area of 54 hectares in 2025.

Farmers should establish a herd of large grazing animals appropriate to this natural space. According to the UNB, there are no plans for sheep or goats. The grazing animals would have to be looked after accordingly, fences maintained, and the pasture meat marketed. Anyone who would like to take on these tasks should have completed training or a degree in agriculture, experience in dealing with the relevant grazing animals and have an interest in nature conservation. The lease for the pasture land is free of charge. The grazing facilities such as fences, shelters or drinking troughs are provided by the UNB.
