A million parcels and three million letters are left behind: the Ver.di union has continued its warning strike at Deutsche Post. Thousands of deliverers stopped working.

In the collective bargaining dispute at Deutsche Post, the Ver.di union has continued its warning strikes. After yesterday the focus was on the letter and parcel centers, on Saturday the delivery staff nationwide were called upon to stop their work. “Participation is good, as is the mood among the strikers,” said a Ver.di spokesman. According to the company, around 9,400 employees responded to the call for a strike. A little more than a third of those who should work according to the roster went on strike.

The post office said there could be a delay of several days in the collection and delivery of letters and parcels. In some regions, the difficult weather conditions caused by the onset of winter would also have a restrictive effect. According to the company, around one million packages or 15 percent of the usual package volume were not transported nationwide on Saturday alone. In addition, around three million letters were left behind, the company said.

Union demands 15 percent wage increase

On Thursday, the second round of collective bargaining between the Bonn-based company and the union also failed to produce any tangible results. Ver.di is demanding 15 percent more wages for around 160,000 employees in Germany over a period of twelve months.

The Post had repeatedly dismissed the salary claim as unrealistic. The company had announced that it would put an offer on the table in the third round of negotiations on February 8th and 9th.
