Which smartphone should it be? This question is becoming increasingly difficult to answer. Stiftung Warentest has therefore selected the best models of the year for every type of customer.

Whether it’s a high-end device with a top camera and a titanium frame or a cheap plastic bomber at a bargain price – and everything in between: the offer at Smartphones are now huge. And makes the choice difficult for customers. In Stiftung Warentest is responsible for the new edition so for a bit of an overview. And highlights four very specific purchase recommendations.

In the so-called “group winner quartet”, the experts selected the test winner from four device categories. The four devices are each the best in their area that made it into the test laboratory this year. And all of them are a clear purchase recommendation for a specific customer group.

For perfectionists: iPhone 15 Pro Max

If you really want the best of the best, come on iPhone 15 Pro Max not over. Apple’s new top model was the only smartphone to date to achieve a “very good” rating of 1.5 in Warentest this fall. Whether camera, battery or general use: The 15 Pro Max gets top marks everywhere. The biggest drawback is the price. Apple’s premium iPhone costs 1,450 euros. Not everyone can or wants to afford that.

By the way, you can find more details about the device in the detailed stern test under this link.

For those on a budget: Xiaomi Redmi Note 12

If you want great technology for a significantly smaller budget, you should take a look at the savings tip from Stiftung Warentest. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G It’s available from just 235 euros – more than 1200 euros cheaper than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. But it offers a great display, strong battery life and a good camera. One weakness is facial recognition: it could be tricked with a photo. Nevertheless, the budget device is “good” (2.2), says Warentest.

For the environmentally conscious: Fairphone 5

If you value sustainability, there is no better choice than this Fairphone 5. It relies on fair production conditions, recycled materials and longevity through long updates and an easy-to-replace battery. And with version 5 it can be at the forefront for the first time: According to Warentest, the current model is the first sustainable smartphone with a “good” (2.4) test rating. However, you have to accept minor weaknesses in WiFi reception and facial recognition. The price: from 680 euros.

For tablet fans: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5

The share of folding devices on the market may still be quite small, but it is growing every year. For the first time, Warentest also names potential buyers of foldables as separate customer types. And he has a clear recommendation for him: This Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 was able to prevail against competitors from Google and Motorola and is also at the forefront of the general smartphone field with a grade of “good” (1.9). Warentest praises the revised folding mechanism. Because the display is prone to scratches, the otherwise good stability rating is still downgraded.

There is good news when it comes to price: While foldables have long been significantly more expensive than classic smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is even cheaper than the iPhone 15 Pro Max at around 1,300 euros.
