Heavy fighting is raging in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. A rocket hits a residential area in Sloviansk. There are dead and injured.

After a Russian missile hit a residential area in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sloviansk, the death toll has risen to nine, officials said. During the night, rescue workers rescued a lifeless woman from the badly damaged high-rise building, Mayor Wadym Lyach said on Facebook. Five residents are still missing under the rubble. A two-year-old child is said to be among the dead. More than 20 people were injured.

According to Ukrainian information, the rocket hit the city in the heavily contested Donetsk region on Friday afternoon. At first there was talk of at least eight dead. Photos show a multi-story building with a large hole in the upper floors.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to the relatives. This week there was “not a single hour without Russian murders and terror,” Zelensky said in a video speech. “This is an evil state. And it will lose. It is our duty to humanity to win. And we will win!” Considering the situation in Donetsk, Zelenskyy thanked all Ukrainian soldiers defending the country. The key to success is “the continuous destruction of the occupiers”.

More than a year after the start of the Russian war of aggression against the neighboring country, the fiercest fighting is raging in Donetsk. The fighting is currently particularly heavy in the town of Bakhmut, south-east of Sloviansk. For months, Russian troops have been trying to take the city, which once had 70,000 inhabitants, in extremely costly battles. Only a few thousand people live there today.
