Federal government examines delivery of Panzerhaubitze 2000 to Ukraine

Bundestag votes with a large majority for delivery of heavy weapons

With a joint motion by the Union and the ruling traffic light parties, the Bundestag voted to deliver heavy weapons to Ukraine. The federal government also received explicit backing for all the steps taken so far.

More heavy weapons for Ukraine from Germany? The country attacked by Russia could receive several self-propelled howitzers from the Bundeswehr. However, there is a problem with this.

DAccording to WELT AM SONNTAG information, the Federal Government is examining the delivery of Panzerhaubitzen 2000 from Bundeswehr stocks to the Ukraine. The government had already promised training for howitzers of this type announced by the Netherlands. Now it is about a package of materials to which Germany and Italy could also contribute in addition to the Netherlands.

“We are in talks with various partners with the aim of providing effective support to Ukraine – also in the field of artillery. There are various options that are currently being examined,” a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense told WELT AM SONNTAG.

The problem with the plan: According to the information, only around 40 of the 119 Panzerhaubitzen 2000 in the Bundeswehr are currently operational. The military are therefore critical of the delivery of even a single-digit number of howitzers. However, representatives of the Dutch armed forces had also shown skepticism, but the government in The Hague politically disregarded the military concerns.

The federal government must also decide on another ring exchange, after Slovenia this time with the Czech Republic. The first lists of materials were exchanged with Prague at the beginning of the week. The export applications from the defense industry for Marder armored personnel carriers and Leopard 1 main battle tanks are still in the Federal Security Council.
