Russia is waging a war of aggression against Ukraine. In the Middle East, however, the Russian Foreign Minister is calling for a ceasefire – and is not sparing in his criticism of the USA.

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has described the cessation of fighting and the resolution of humanitarian issues as essential to easing the Gaza war. “Afterwards, of course, a mechanism is needed that looks at the situation in the larger context,” Lavrov said on Monday in Tehran, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. This context envisages a two-state solution. He accused Washington of having blocked the work of the international quartet of mediators – the UN, USA, EU and Russia – for years.

In addition, at the meeting in Iran, Lavrov criticized the deployment of US warships to the Eastern Mediterranean as a dangerous interference in the conflict. The more such steps are taken, “the greater the risk that the conflict will spread,” said the Russian chief diplomat.

The Russian leadership, which is itself waging a destructive war of aggression against Ukraine, has been calling for civilians and civilian infrastructure to be spared for days. Russia’s war against Ukraine has so far killed thousands of civilians and destroyed entire cities and towns. In addition to a ceasefire, Russia demanded the opening of humanitarian corridors to help the people in the Gaza Strip with food and medicine, among other things.
