Another day comes to an end under fire in the port city of Mariupol. According to Ukrainian sources, no civilians managed to leave the city. Elsewhere, however, there were also successful evacuations.
The people in the encircled southeastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol have to hold out: According to Ukrainian information, the most recent attempt to get residents out of the city has failed. “No civilian managed to leave the city,” said Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk. Russian troops would not have respected a temporary ceasefire for evacuations. Aid deliveries could not have reached the city either.
As the Mariupol City Council spread on Telegram, the port city was also under fire on Thursday, although an escape corridor was to be opened for the population. The projectiles hit residential buildings and a university building was also damaged. The city council also blamed Russian troops for the attacks.

Vereshchuk made a dramatic appeal to the international community: “Help Mariupol! There is a real humanitarian catastrophe there,” she asked in a video message. “No water, medicine or food has reached the people who have been under total fire for several days in a row.” Several attempts to evacuate civilians from the city had failed in the past few days. Mariupol in the southeast of the country officially has 400,000 inhabitants.
Mutual accusations after attack on clinic
Meanwhile, after the bombing of a maternity clinic in Mariupol, criticism of the attack and the Russian response to it continues. According to Ukrainian sources, three people were killed, including a child, and 17 others were injured. The United Nations, for example, has rejected allegations from Moscow about alleged false reports about an attack on a building in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

It is “very worrying” that the United Nations is spreading this information without checking it.

Working escape corridors
According to Deputy Prime Minister Vereshchuk, aid corridors have been successfully set up in some cities despite the tense situation. “In the past two days we have moved more than 60,000 people from the cities of Sumy, Trostianets and Krasnopillya to Poltava,” Vereshchuk said. This affected women, children, the disabled and the elderly. “Around 20,000 people were evacuated from the cities of Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel, Worsel and others in the Kyiv region yesterday alone,” the Deputy Prime Minister continued. The action will continue.
According to her, it was also possible to save about 3,000 people from the city of Izyum in the Kharkiv region. More than 100 tons of relief supplies were brought to the embattled small town. The head of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Synyehubov, said on Facebook that Russia had not kept to the “green corridor” agreement in Izyum and continued to shell the city.
Killed more than 70 children
According to the Ukrainian parliament’s human rights commissioner Lyudmyla Denizova, 71 children have been killed in the country since the war began two weeks ago. More than 100 were also injured, Denisova said on Telegram. The United Nations are currently speaking of 549 dead civilians, including 41 children.
According to Health Minister Viktor Lyaschko, a total of 63 hospitals were hit in attacks, five medical workers were killed and more than 10 seriously injured. “There are also slightly wounded people who are already back on duty,” the Unian agency quoted the minister as saying.
