War Against Ukraine: Infrastructure in Russian Crosshairs

Status: 12/28/2022 3:13 p.m

Russia is trying to break Ukrainian morale by attacking critical infrastructure. More than 700 important objects are said to have been destroyed since the beginning of the war. There were numerous air raids again today.

According to government information, more than 700 critical infrastructure objects have been destroyed in Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression at the end of February. “It’s about gas pipelines, substations, bridges and the like,” Deputy Interior Minister Yevgeny Jenin told Ukrainian television. In all, more than 35,000 objects were shot down by Russian troops, he added.

Since October, the Russian military has been specifically targeting energy supply systems in Ukraine. The Ukrainian power grid has been badly damaged by the constant fire from rockets, cruise missiles and kamikaze drones. Sudden emergency shutdowns occur again and again. In the dark and cold winter days, people are thus without light for hours – and sometimes also cut off from the heat and water supply.

Heavy air raids in Kherson

Meanwhile, Russian attacks continue unabated. For example, new airstrikes were reported from the southern Ukrainian city of Cherson. The Russian armed forces fired 33 rockets at civilian targets there alone in the 24 hours up to early Wednesday morning, the Ukrainian general staff said.

In addition, inhabited areas on the right bank of the Dnipro River near the regional capital, which was recaptured from the Ukrainian army last month, were shelled with mortars and artillery.

Russia strengthens troops in Luhansk

On the front in eastern Ukraine, the heaviest fighting continued around the town of Bakhmut, which has been under massive attack by Russian troops for months, and further north in the towns of Svatove and Kreminna in the Luhansk region. Here the Ukrainian forces are trying to break through Russian positions.

The frontline has changed little, but Russian pressure has increased as Moscow has deployed additional tanks, armored vehicles and soldiers to combat zones, says Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov. British intelligence confirmed that Russia has strengthened its forces in the Luhansk region. The city of Kreminna has become more vulnerable to Ukrainian advances further west.
