At the beginning of 2024, China will continue to strive to present itself as a moderator for the peaceful solution to global conflicts. When it comes to Taiwan, the guest from Beijing is adamant.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has again called for a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine war. “China is working tirelessly to find a political solution to the crisis,” Wang Yi said in his speech at the Munich Security Conference, according to the official translation. They want to achieve one goal: pave the way for peace talks, prevent a vicious circle and stabilize the situation. With regard to Ukraine and Russia, he emphasized: “The security interests of both countries must be recognized.” Wang Yi once again avoided condemning the Russian war of aggression.

Wang Yi called for a ceasefire in the Gaza war. The fighting must stop; humanitarian corridors are necessary. The only way that Israel and the Palestinians can live in peace is a two-state solution. All of this is also important in order to ease the situation in the Red Sea.

Wang Yi portrays China as a mediator

Basically, Wang Yi portrayed his country as a mediator in a whole range of conflicts. China is a force for stability even on difficult issues. “We address symptoms and causes of conflict and work toward peaceful solutions,” he said. “China is doing its part to overcome global challenges.” No matter how much the world changes: China will always remain a “responsible, large country.”

Specifically, Wang Yi spoke out in favor of cooperation with the USA in view of long tensions in the past. “When China and the US work together, great things can be achieved.” That is better than confrontation in the world.

“Taiwan remains part of Chinese territory”

Wang Yi described the Taiwan conflict as an “internal issue” and said: “Taiwan remains part of Chinese territory.” A return of Taiwan is “a basic requirement for us”.

Beijing considers the East Asian island of Taiwan part of its territory, even though an independent, democratically elected government has been in power there for decades. The USA, in turn, is an important ally of Taiwan.
