A man in Wales drove through the night with two flat tires – and was drunk at the same time. He testified in court that he had been affected by a corona infection.

The sight must have been more than unusual: a 42-year-old Welsh man was driving through the streets of the town of Llangyfelach at night with only two tires on his van. The man came about 16 kilometers after he said he had a double flat tire. Then the police stopped him.

But the problem was not solely due to the burst tires: the driver was heavily intoxicated. Apparently he just got back from a night out with friends. As the South West Police announced, the man had a blood alcohol content of 1.32 per mil – and had almost doubled the permissible limit. He was lucky that there was no accident.

Man tested positive for Corona after driving without tires

In court, however, the driver had an excuse ready. He said he tested positive for Covid-19 the next day. Due to the infection, he was a bit confused in his head that evening, he claimed. “That influenced his decision to continue with two flat tires,” his attorney said. “He drove on because he wanted to find a safe spot on the freeway.” The road traffic regulations also provide for this.

According to the lawyer, the man had drunk two glasses of beer and was not aware that he had already exceeded the alcohol limit. However, the court did not accept this explanation and revoked the driver’s license of the father of four children for 17 months. In addition, the 42-year-old has to pay 300 pounds, the equivalent of around 350 euros. His hope for a mild sentence was only partially fulfilled.
