The drivers of the Lieferando food delivery service should earn up to one euro more per hour in the coming months. However, the NGG trade union describes this as “window dressing”.

The drivers of the Lieferando restaurant delivery service should get more money for the burdens during the winter months. According to its own statements, the company, which belongs to the delivery service group Just Eat Takeaway, will pay a winter bonus of 50 cents “per hour worked” for the first time between November and March.

An additional 50 cents per hour will be paid for work during the afternoon rush hour from Friday to Sunday, it said. “Thus, drivers can earn up to one euro more in winter at work during the popular order times.”

More winter clothes

According to Lieferando, the suppliers also receive inflation compensation of up to 300 euros before Christmas, depending on the agreed working hours of the couriers. The winter outfit will be expanded to include thermal underwear. According to Lieferando, the drivers earned a nationwide monthly average of more than 14 euros per hour “with a guaranteed hourly wage of twelve euros plus variable wage components such as bonuses for each order delivered”.

The company also explained that most couriers are now on service bikes. The aim is also to equip all employees with work cell phones by the end of the year.

“Nothing can run for less than 15 euros an hour”

The union Food-Genuss-Gaststätten (NGG), on the other hand, states that many couriers still have neither a company bicycle nor a company mobile phone. When asked by the dpa news agency, the union described the winter bonus as “window dressing”. “It’s very clear to us: nothing can run for less than 15 euros an hour,” said Mark Baumeister, NGG department head for the hospitality industry.

The union is demanding collective bargaining and says it is in the process of recruiting additional members at the individual sites. Lieferando has regional works councils and a nationwide general works council. Despite white spots in some regions, the company is now on the right track, said Baumeister.
