They wanted to collect amber in the Wadden Sea. But the water rose much faster than expected. A sea rescue ship had to rescue three brothers near Cuxhaven.
There were three brothers with us Cuxhaven In search of amber, they ventured too far into the mudflats at the mouth of the Elbe, and their walk ultimately triggered a dramatic rescue operation. According to the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons (DGzRS) and the police, the 16 to 19 year olds ran four kilometers along a guide dam on Saturday evening and were surprised by unusually quickly rising water.
Emergency call from the Wadden Sea – then the brothers were rescued
One of the brothers made an emergency call to the police via cell phone, whereupon a major search and rescue operation began. As the DGzRS announced in Bremen, one of its sea rescue cruisers located the missing people’s flares shortly after leaving Cuxhaven. Sea rescuers reached the young people, who were already up to their stomachs in water, in a shallow-draft dinghy and took them on board, slightly hypothermic.
Loud DGzRS The amber collectors wore insulating thermal wetsuits and had powerful LED lamps with them. They set off less than an hour after low tide, but the water in the North Sea rose unusually quickly due to the stormy winds of the past few days.
In addition to DGzRS forces, units from the fire department, water police and German Life Saving Society (DLRG) were alerted to take part in the search operation off the coast of Lower Saxony in the dark.
According to the police A drone was also used in Cuxhaven. The sea rescue cruiser brought the brothers back to Cuxhaven, where they were taken to a hospital for further care as a precaution.
