VR headset: Meta withdraws support for Oculus Quest

Meta only wants to support the first generation of Quest VR headsets to a limited extent. Security updates and bug fixes for the device originally called the Oculus Quest should only be released until 2024, Meta told buyers in an email.

Other steps take effect even earlier. For example, Meta already does not want to release any new features for the quest, it says in the email. From March 5th, access to the social features of Meta Horizon Home will also be removed, meaning that users will no longer be able to invite other users into their virtual VR home.

The restrictions on the so-called parties, which act as chats or as a multiplayer lobby, weigh more heavily. Those using the first generation of Quest headsets will no longer be able to join such parties in the future. You can no longer create them yourself, which cuts you off from many of the VR headset’s social functions.

In 2019, the Quest was still on the market under the name Oculus Quest. Sales were discontinued a year and a half later in favor of the successor model Meta Quest 2. During the same period, Facebook stopped selling the Meta headsets in Germany due to abuse proceedings by the Federal Cartel Office. The cartel office was bothered by the account link: you needed a Facebook account for a long time to be able to operate an Oculus headset.

This forced linking was broken in the summer with a separate meta account. Meta has been selling its VR headsets in Germany again since last December. The Meta Quest 2 is offered for 450 euros and the Meta Quest Pro for 1800 euros.
