Exciting weeks in the Volkswagen Group: With the Skoda Superb, a new bestseller hope is being launched – without an electric car version. Fans are over the moon.

Wolfsburg/Bratislava – Volkswagen is having a lot of trouble with the electrification of its model range, affected by tense economic developments.

Now, however, an important new product from a group subsidiary is coming onto the market, which has always been a bestseller and is unlikely to disappoint in this regard, even in its fourth generation: Skoda Superb.

VW subsidiary presents Skoda Superb: classic instead of innovative

This is mainly because the German-Czech success model scores points more with classic values than with innovative electronics – which sometimes even mutates into a safety hazard. When the Skoda Superb is launched on the market in spring 2024, the mid-range will, as before, be available as a sedan and station wagon (“Super Combi”).

However, you won’t find an electric car in the manufacturer’s range of engines: in the medium term, the Skoda Superb will be available with two plug-in hybrids and two petrol and two diesel engines; the units cover a power range between 150 and 265 hp.

However, the “classic” drive technologies do not mean that no further development is taking place: While the consumption of combustion engines has been reduced by ten percent according to the manufacturer, there has also been an optimization in the PHEV versions: the electric range has been extended to 100 kilometers.

Skoda Superb 2024 costs a similar amount to its platform brother from VW

What the Superb has ahead of its platform brother, the VW Passat: In contrast to its Wolfsburg counterpart – which is now also built in Bratislava – the Skoda flagship is not only available as a station wagon, but also as a classic sedan.

Another difference between the two brands has apparently disappeared over the years: the prices of Skoda’s new product are hardly inferior to those of its German sibling. The starting price for the notchback sedan is 38,480 euros, the variant with a large hatch is available from 39,580 euros.

The new Passat station wagon (B9 series) also costs just under 40,000 euros. While the Skoda models were previously considered cheaper versions of the VW Group, both manufacturers are now on the same level.

Skoda: New Superb is ideal for families and combustion engine fans

Many families with children will probably be attracted to the new Skoda Superb: the station wagon in particular is a loadmaster and has become longer in the course of the generation change in order to create more space in the interior.

The Czech manufacturer now specifies a loading volume of 690 to 1920 liters for the Superb Combi, the sedan offers slightly less. Another plus point: As is known from other Skoda models, there is no lack of clever features with numerous storage options. For example, there are the folding hooks on the side walls of the trunk.

What makes the new Skoda Superb particularly suitable for long journeys such as holiday trips is the revised diesel drive with all-wheel drive: On the one hand, double-glazed windows ensure quieter driving noises than before. The standard consumption has been further reduced compared to the previous model; the values should be between 4.7 and 6.0 liters per 100 km.

The full 400 Nm of maximum torque is available at a low 1700 rpm, which contributes to a relaxed driving style and lower consumption. The 66 liter fuel tank allows the Skoda Superb to travel around 1000 kilometers before the next stop at a petrol station.

Skoda Superb: “Finally a car again and not a cordless screwdriver”

Numerous fans appreciate this and show their enthusiasm in the corresponding comment sections. However, there is also criticism of the price list:

  • “Finally a sensible drive that is manufactured cleanly and still works even after ten years. This is sustainable, good for environmental protection and economical.”
  • “Skodas have long been the better VW. Better price/performance ratio, better breakdown statistics, better workmanship…”
  • “After a few extras from the VW Group’s thick catalog of surcharges, you can quickly reach 55 to 60 thousand euros.”
  • “Finally a car again and not a cordless screwdriver.”
  • “It’s a great car, but at that price it will be more of a company car than a family will be able to afford.”
  • “I now have too much electronics included in the standard package in my new cars.”
  • “Skoda is the new Volkswagen, a little cheaper and more practical than any comparable VW.”
  • “Had a second generation Superb 4×4. It was actually inexpensive.”

But no combustion engine shutdown? A new EU law lets conservatives celebrate in Europe.
