Volkswagen is gradually rolling out its electric family with the ID label. Next up is the ID.5 as a coupé version of the ID.4, which is also celebrating its premiere with the sporty GTX version.

The modular electrical construction kit MEB is slowly starting to roll at Volkswagen. The next representative is the VW ID.5, which celebrates its premiere as a hatchback version of the ID.4 in early 2022 with three drive alternatives: as rear-wheel drive with 128 kW / 174 PS, 150 kW / 204 PS and the sportier GTX with 220 kW / 299 PS with its all-wheel drive. The normal versions are cordoned off at a scant 160 km / h and the sports version of the ID.5 GTX at 180 km / h. It can get tough for longer motorway journeys. Even more powerful versions such as those currently offered by the Hyundai Group in particular with its electric models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and especially the Kia EV6 and outputs of well over 500 hp are currently not being planned. The Wolfsburg-based company takes a down-to-earth approach and primarily wants to appeal to the volume audience, who feel they are in good hands with the performance spectrum from 170 to 300 hp.

The Volkswagen Group is also surprisingly cautious when it comes to charging power. So far, the ID.3 / ID.4 has been at a narrow 125 kilowatts and the ID.5 should offer at least 135 kilowatts and in the medium term probably 150 or more kilowatts in order to be competitive. In half an hour, the battery pack in the underbody can be charged to an additional range of more than 300 kilometers. The 77 kWh battery is expected to achieve ranges of up to 520 kilometers when fully charged. In conjunction with a suitable infrastructure, bidirectional charging should also be possible at home – the ID.5 can be used as an energy dispenser if desired. For those who have to pull a trailer, the VW ID.5 offers 1,200 or 1,400 kilograms (GTX). There is a choice of a standard chassis, a sporty chassis set-up or variably adjustable dampers. The software should now run more stable than at the start. The latest software generation 3.0 enables updates and upgrades on the go / over-the-air. Selected functions that were not ordered at the start or by the previous owner can be booked retrospectively.

The interior and equipment of the ID.5 are largely identical to the ID.4. There is the well-known purist interior with the small 5.3-inch screen behind the wheel, the much more contemporary 12-inch screen in the middle of the dashboard and the large head-up display, which also handles augmented reality displays . Unlike the sister model Skoda Enyaq or most other models, the VW ID.5 is not even available with elegant leather seats for an extra charge. Textiles and plastics against the tone. In addition to the inner values, the VW ID.5 has its own silhouette compared to the ID.4, which is ultimately nothing more than a different hat, as the chassis and the weight of a good 2.1 tons are not changed. To achieve this, the designers are trying to force the sporty design language of the electric crossover coupé with 21-inch wheels and short overhangs. The trunk volume of the 4.60 meter long VW ID.5 remains almost identical to the ID.4 at 549 liters despite the sloping roof line. The cargo space can be expanded to up to 1,561 liters by folding down the rear seats. Unfortunately, the electric tailgate is only available as an option.
