In some places in Thomas Mann’s work there are these well-hidden but noticeable shoals of kitsch. Like at the beginning of “Tonio Kröger”, when school is just over and it says: “The little people started merrily trotting so that the ice cream splashed around and the things of science rattled in the seals’ knapsacks.”
