A few days after heavy fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan, US top politician Pelosi has arrived in Yerevan. There she wants to meet, among other things, the Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has arrived in Armenia at the head of a congressional delegation. According to the US Embassy, a meeting with the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is planned.

Shortly before her departure, Pelosi said that with the trip she wanted to draw attention to the situation of human rights and respect for the dignity of all people.

Ceasefire apparently holds

After two days of heavy fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia, a ceasefire was agreed on Wednesday evening. So far, no violations of the ceasefire have been reported.

According to official figures, more than 100 Armenians were killed in the fighting. Pashinyan said in parliament that 50 square kilometers of Armenian territory were in the hands of the enemy. The Azerbaijani side spoke of 54 fallen soldiers of their army.

Victory of Azerbaijan 2020

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at odds over borders and territories for decades – including because of the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Mostly Armenians live there, but according to international law the area is on Azerbaijani territory.

During a six-week war in 2020, Azerbaijan retook much of the region and surrounding areas that had been controlled by Armenian-backed separatists for decades. The war ended with a Russian-brokered armistice.
