A child and a young person were injured at a Christmas market during the traditional Klausen activity in the Allgäu. As the police announced on Monday, the two visitors to a Christmas market in Markt Wald (Unterallgäu district) sustained minor injuries on Sunday. Four masked Klausen attacked the two with massive blows and a kick. The police are investigating assault offenses against unknown persons.
Apart from that, the Klausen largely gave out “harmless blows” at the Christmas market, “which proved to be unproblematic within the framework of customs,” the police said.
Traditionally, young men in animal costumes and masks with rods parade through towns. The custom is said to drive away evil spirits of darkness and winter. Assault crimes occur “from time to time,” a police spokesman said on Monday. However, there is no major problem with acts of violence as a result of customs.
