Violence, non-consent… Should we be worried about the success of “dark romance” books?

This summer, you may have been tempted by reading one of these stories. “Dark romance” encompasses these love story stories – that’s the promise – taking place in dark or fantastical universes, and where the characters exhibit deviant or psychologically fragile behavior.

Before being published and becoming real commercial successes, many of these stories originate on blogs like Watt Pad. Above, budding writers try their hand at the genre. As for editors, they identify the most popular stories. This is how Sarah Rivens, author of the saga captive, was spotted by Hachette editions. His first volume, released in 2022, has since sold more than 300,000 copies according to Editat. The plot? A woman, captive of a man.

If Ella thought that there couldn’t be worse than John, she quickly realizes that her new owner plays in a completely different category. This certain “Ash”, charismatic leader of the Scott network, refuses the presence of a captive at his side. For some obscure reason, he has a visceral hatred for these women. A dangerous game then begins between them, because Asher intends to make Ella pay, but she does not intend to give in…”

Enough to ask questions about the content of these romances and the image of love and sexuality that they convey. In this new episode of ” Everything is explained “, we will try to understand what these “dark romances” produce in the imaginations of readers. What narrative structures are they based on? Do they shape our fantasies? Do they trivialize violence in relationships? Do they make us desire worrying and dangerous situations? Or simply fantasize about transgressive acts without wanting to take action? Do they have a cathartic power?

Answers in this podcast.
