The ten-year-old who slipped dozens of meters into a narrow concrete pipe in Vietnam has died. He was pronounced dead around 100 hours after unsuccessful rescue attempts, Dong Thap provincial deputy chief Doan Tan Buu said. A camera lowered into the pipe showed no signs of life from the child. The body should now be recovered as soon as possible.

Pillar to be pulled out of the ground

Little Nam fell into a hollow bridge pillar at a construction site on Saturday and slid down 35 meters, presumably while looking for scrap metal. According to the authorities, nobody thought that a child could slide so deep into the pillar, because the tube only has a diameter of 25 centimeters.

Rescuers had repeatedly pumped oxygen into the pipe. Using heavy equipment, they continued to try to loosen the earth around the bridge pillar in order to be able to pull it out of the ground with a crane. The Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính had meanwhile intervened in the drama and instructed the rescuers to do their best. The military also took part in the rescue work.
