Video: War of nerves over the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

STORY: Threatening super meltdown or normal operation? These footage of southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant were released on Wednesday. It was unclear on Friday what the current situation was in the nuclear power plant occupied by Russian troops. Russia initially reported in the morning that the system was running without any failures. A little later, the Tass news agency quoted an administrative official employed by Russia as saying that the nuclear power plant was no longer supplying electricity. Ukrainian forces destroyed the last remaining cable. Ukrainian authorities, in turn, announced that they are attempting to restart two of the six reactors. According to Ukrainian information, Zaporizhia was disconnected from the power grid on Thursday. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy praised the Ukrainian technicians who operate the facility under the eyes of the Russian military: “If our station staff had not reacted after the power failure, we would have already had to deal with the consequences of a radiation accident. Russia has Ukraine and all Europeans in one situation one step away from a radiation catastrophe.” Russia blamed Ukrainian forces for Thursday’s incident. They caused a fire in a forest near the power plant, Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-appointed official in the occupied city of Enerhodar, wrote on Telegram. The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has come under fire several times in recent weeks. Russia and Ukraine blame each other for this. Negotiations are currently underway between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Russia about an inspection of the plant.
