Video: War in Ukraine: Here to stay

STORY: “My name is Ostap, and I came to Germany last year.” Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, life has changed abruptly for 14-year-old Ostap Khaliuk. On March 6, 2022, he left with his mother his hometown of Kiev.”I lived in a big city, in Kiev, and my life was very good. I had a lot of friends, I went to a good school. At first my mother said that we would stay in Kiev, but later For four days the situation was already very bad, and my mother decided to take the train. We didn’t know exactly where the train was going, but we knew that it was going west.” Ostap and his mother came via Poland and Slovakia Schwalbach am Taunus. In the city near Frankfurt am Main, there were rooms in a former hotel for those seeking help. In Schwalbach am Taunus, Ostap attended an intensive class at the Friedrich-Ebert School to improve his German language skills. He did g ute progress and can follow the lessons, which are held entirely in German, well. He has ambitious goals for the future: “For my future, I plan to do my Abitur and go to university in Germany and work as a programmer or AI engineer.” Teacher Roland Glotzbach is confident that Ostap can achieve his goals . That also applies to many of his classmates from Ukraine who sit next to him in the intensive class.” Well, the integration on the job market at Ostap is very good. In general, even with the children who have now come here, they are actually so far along that you can say they will enrich the German job market.” Shortly after fleeing the Ukraine, Ostap was convinced that he would return as soon as possible. The first few weeks in Germany were associated with a lot of stress and uncertainty. In the meantime – he says – he has arrived here and wants to stay. Germany has become a second home for him.
