Video: Ukraine demands inspection of Zaporizhia NPP

STORY: Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yevgeny Tsimbaliuk, has called for a speedy international inspection of the Russian-held Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in south-eastern Ukraine. A check at the end of August would be best, said Zymbaljuk on Monday in Vienna. The concerns are great, because if Europe’s largest nuclear power plant were to be damaged, the consequences would be huge – not just for Ukraine. Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of shelling the nuclear power plant site. Russia’s Defense Ministry said Monday that Ukraine shelled the nuclear power plant on Aug. 7, damaging high-voltage power lines and forcing the power plant to reduce output. Kyiv, on the other hand, has denied an attack on the plant. State operator Energoatom said on Sunday that a worker was injured when Russian forces shelled the power plant on Saturday night. However, according to a media report, Russia is open to an international inspection. Russia’s permanent representative in Vienna was quoted by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti as saying that his country is ready to allow the UN Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to examine the plant.
