STORY: Former US President Donald Trump has appealed to the Supreme Court in a dispute over the secret documents confiscated from his private estate. Trump’s attorneys filed an emergency motion to overturn a lower court’s decision. The Justice Department has attempted to criminalize a dispute over document management and is now vehemently opposed to a transparent process that would allow much-needed oversight, Trump’s attorneys said on Tuesday. Judge Clarence Thomas, who is hearing the urgent appeal, has requested a response from the Justice Department by Oct. 11. Thomas is one of the six Conservatives on the nine-member Supreme Court. The lower court’s ruling prevents an independent arbitrator requested by Trump, the so-called Special Master, from examining more than 100 classified documents. The files are among 11,000 documents seized by the FBI in an Aug. 8 raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Palm Beach mansion. In the United States, by law, all records at the end of a government term must be turned over to the National Archives. Numerous investigations are underway against Trump. He has left open whether he wants to run for a second term as president in 2024.
