Sydney Zoo welcomes baby pygmy hippopotamus

Only a few days old and already such a big mouth. A pygmy hippopotamus baby was born at the end of November in Sydney Zoo, the second calf from mother Kambiri, says Gabe Virgona, of the Taronga Zoo Sydney. “Kambiri herself was born here and both are doing very well. She is a great mom, she is very caring. In the first few days she did not leave the calf’s side, was very calm and only took care of the baby’s needs. She only got a little more adventurous a few days ago and walked around a bit more while the baby slept. But she still keeps a close eye on everything the calf does. ” The little one, which can soon be quite big and weigh up to 300 kilograms, has no name yet. It is the first pygmy hippopotamus calf in the zoo in more than four years. The species is native to and endangered in West Africa; fewer than 3,000 animals live in the wild.
