Israel has the right to self-defense. “We say to our friends in Israel and to all Jews: You are not alone. We stand by your side in these terrible hours,” adds Steinmeier. Everything must be tried to ensure that the Gaza war does not turn into a conflagration. And the Federal Republic must not tolerate hatred of Israel on German streets. Anti-Semitism is the red line. “Protecting Jewish life is a state task, but it is also a civic duty,” warns the Federal President.
