CDU leader Friedrich Merz had caused a stir with an apparently deliberately chosen formulation of the alignment of the Union parties. At a press conference as part of the CSU summer retreat in the Bavarian monastery of Andechs, Merz said on Wednesday that the Union was an “alternative for Germany – with substance.”
