Video: Söder: Enable winter sports, but not at any price

STORY: What’s next for winter sports in Germany? Especially against the background of noticeably higher temperatures. Because of the mild weather, skiing is no longer possible in many places. This of course makes it a little tighter where there is snow. Like here on Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze: “I do feel safe because I’m careful. But there are definitely quite a few people out and about because it’s the week when everyone is on vacation. It could be a few fewer, then there will probably be fewer accidents. I think so.” Behaving appropriately to the situation is definitely very important. But due to climate change, the topic of winter sports is now also getting an ever-increasing political dimension. Especially in a winter sports country like Bavaria: Markus Söder (CDU), Prime Minister of Bavaria: “Of course we want to make winter sports possible, not at any price. Of course we need snowmaking and systems, but not like it is sometimes the case in Austria, come hell or high water We make our living from winter sports and also from summer vacations. Incidentally, we are a bit stronger there than the Austrians. That’s why you have to develop concepts for both. We will also give the local tourism industry very strong support in accompanying this change And where it’s possible, skiing yes, with pleasure, but also with common sense to do it. And we just don’t want the mountains to end up being a Disneyland. It shouldn’t be like that.” There is still snow up here – at an altitude of almost 3,000 meters. But how things will continue in the future, and above all at what speed winter sports will become more and more difficult for ski fans like here, is still completely unclear at the moment.
