Video: Selenskyj prepares Ukrainians for cold and dark days

STORY: The apartment in the Ukrainian city of Cherson where Oleksandr Antonenko lives with his 82-year-old mother was badly damaged after a Russian missile attack a few days ago. Windows were blown out and a wall destroyed. Despite the difficult conditions, Oleksandr and his mother want to stay here. After all, after being without electricity and gas for months, they are now connected to the power supply again: “We have gas, we have electricity. I wish we had water too, then we could use the bathroom.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is preparing his people for dark and cold days in view of the ongoing Russian shelling of critical infrastructure. He expects further rocket fire in the coming days, Zelenskyj said in his nightly video message. “We see that the terrorists are planning new attacks, we know that as a fact,” said Zelenskyj literally. After the attacks of the past few days, many people across the country are without heating, water and electricity. People in the Ukrainian-controlled Donbass region are preparing for a harsh winter. Despite the unstable energy supply, they want to stay. Like this man: “I prepare wood and prune our maple trees while they’re still growing. The winter will be harsh. The roof is leaking, we don’t have enough wood. This is the only way we can survive.” Snow fell in Kyiv on Sunday and temperatures were around freezing. Millions of people in the capital region were cut off from the energy supply. The authorities said that the repairs to the systems were in full swing, but given the high consumption, further blackouts could not be ruled out.
