STORY: The conservative candidate Rodrigo Chaves becomes the new president in Costa Rica. According to the preliminary results, Chaves won more than 50 percent of the votes in a runoff. Chaves is the former finance minister of the Central American country. After counting 98 percent of the votes, the 60-year-old economist and former World Bank employee came to almost 53 percent, as the electoral authority announced on its website late Sunday evening. Costa Rica has around five million inhabitants and is considered one of the most politically stable countries in Central America. However, the popular holiday destination Costa Rica is currently suffering from an economic crisis, which has been exacerbated by the corona pandemic.
