Video: Rare dinosaur skeleton unearthed in Australia

STORY: A glimpse into prehistoric times: In Australia, scientists have discovered the complete skeleton of a large, long-necked marine reptile that is about 100 million years old. According to the paleontologists, the find in the state of Queensland is an Elasmosaurus. These animals lived during the early Cretaceous period around 155 million years ago. Project leader Espen Knutsen from the Queensland Museum Network: “The unusual thing is that this skull also had part of the body attached to it. Normally when we dig these things out of the ground we find parts of the body and not a head. And very, very Rarely do we find just the head but no body, so the fact that this guy had both allows us to close that gap and find that intersection between body and head that will answer a lot of questions about biodiversity.” Australia’s Queensland was mostly covered by a vast and shallow sea called the Eromanga Sea during the Early Cretaceous Period, and fossil remains of marine reptiles and other dinosaurs are commonly found, according to the Queensland Museum.
