Putin offers China additional gas supplies
Vladimir Putin visiting China. Ahead of the opening of the Beijing Olympics, the Russian President met his host, Chinese party leader Xi Jinping. During the talks, Russia offered to expand gas supplies. A new contract has been prepared. This provides for the supply of ten billion cubic meters of gas per year. In addition, Putin also announced proposals for increased supplies to the oil sector. China has a great need for energy imports for its fast-growing industry. For Russia, deliveries from East Siberian gas sources to Asian countries represent a second sales channel. Russia also supplies gas to the West. However, political relations are currently more tense than they have been in years, mainly because of the Ukraine crisis.
