Protests in Sri Lanka continue

STORY: Security forces in Sri Lanka used tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators. The protesters gathered in front of Prime Minister Rajapaksa’s private home in the city of Tangalle on Monday to demonstrate against the ongoing economic crisis. There were also large spontaneous protests in other parts of the country. In the capital, Colombo, demonstrators called for the president’s ouster and real political change. The indebted country, which has been ruled by Rajapaksa and his family since 2019, is struggling to pay for imports of fuel and other goods due to a shortage of foreign exchange. Recently, there have been power cuts lasting hours and a lack of essential goods.
