Video: Persistent heat – Fish suffer from rising water temperatures

STORY: There used to be a stream here – habitat for the fish, which then swim into the Mangfall River. The inflow has now almost completely dried up. The small fish that are still here have little space to grow and find food. When the water temperature rises, the oxygen content also falls – which is a real burden for many fish. Maximilian Voit from the Upper Bavaria Fishing Association warns of the consequences. “Today we are in the situation where a large number of bodies of water are falling dry. It doesn’t matter which fish are in the waters. It is actually the case that the fish die if they are not removed first by the fishermen and fishing associations.” Many recreational athletes are now out and about on the waters – additional stress for the fish. “We will certainly see a reduction in biodiversity over the next few years. We will find more and more invasive fish species, such as catfish or some species of bullhead, but we will also experience a loss of native fish species.” Home for many fish: Lake Tegernsee. But here, too, the higher water temperatures and thus the lower oxygen content are a real problem for the native fish species.
