Omicron infections are spreading rapidly in the UK
In Great Britain, the corona infections with the Omikron variant are apparently increasing by leaps and bounds. The infections doubled every two to three days. In London alone, 40 percent of all newly tested positive corona cases can be traced back to it, said Health Minister Sajid Javid on Monday. However, so far there have been no deaths in the UK from Omikron and only ten people have had to be treated in clinics. When the first omicron infections were discovered in Great Britain at the end of November, Prime Minister Boris Johnson had introduced stricter measures and warned his compatriots of a downright tidal wave. The omicron variant, which was first discovered in South Africa and Hong Kong in November, now occurs in almost 60 countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). According to British experts, there are around 30 changes in the so-called spike protein with which the viruses enter human cells compared to the original corona virus.
The number of cases has skyrocketed in the last few days, said Health Minister Javid.
