North Korea’s rulers: economic situation in the country “bleak”

North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un speaks of a “grim economic situation”: In his speech on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party, Kim addressed the precarious economic situation in his country. North Korea is facing the big task of adapting and developing the state economy, the official news agency KCNA quoted Kim on Monday. The only way is for the entire party to unite. Officials should not seek privileges or preferential treatment. Instead, they should always consider whether their work is harming the interests of the people or causing difficulties for the people. International sanctions have also been putting the economy of the largely isolated country under pressure for years. These sanctions were declared because of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. Then there are the consequences of severe storms and floods. According to a report by a United Nations official, the weakest part of the population is threatened with starvation. Because the country had sealed itself off even more during the corona pandemic. Nevertheless, the North Korean leadership celebrated the party anniversary on Sunday with art performances, gala events and fireworks, as North Korean state media reported. As a result, North Koreans laid flowers in front of the statues of the state’s founder Kim Il Sung and the late ruler Kim Jong Il. The recordings also show young people, some of whom wore masks, at an evening gala while fireworks lit up the night sky.
