Video: North Korea’s ruler Kim dismisses number two of the military

STORY: North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un has fired the number two in the military administration, Pak Jon Chon. State media reports. Pak was Deputy Chairman of the Central Military Commission and Secretary of the Central Committee of the ruling Labor Party. He was replaced by Ri Yong Gil at the annual meeting of the Central Committee last week, the North Korean state news agency KCNA reported on Sunday. A reason for the personnel exchange was not given. North Korea’s leadership is regularly renewed. The party meetings at the end of the year are often used to announce personnel changes and important political decisions. The party’s Central Military Commission, headed by Kim, is considered the most powerful military decision-making body in the country, ranking above the Defense Ministry. Kim recently announced that he wanted to massively expand the country’s nuclear arsenal. The goal is mass production of tactical nuclear weapons, KCNA reported on New Year’s Day, citing statements by Kim at a meeting of the Communist Party. It is important to drastically increase North Korea’s clout in order to protect national interests against the United States and its allies, who are putting more and more military pressure on North Korea, it said.
