No fuel – long lines in Almaty

After almost a week of violent protests that broke out in several Kazakh regions, residents of the largest city of Almaty struggled to get their food on Saturday. Long queues formed in front of the shops. “You can see a baker back there. How many people are there. And other supermarkets all closed yesterday. But people need food.” The owner of a butcher’s shop says while shopping: “The prices have risen.” “What prices?” “Vegetables, potatoes. Because everyone complains about a lack of fuel. That’s the problem. There is enough food, but my suppliers cannot deliver because of all the army checkpoints and the lack of fuel.” These days, Kazakhs are stuck in traffic in front of the gas stations. According to the government, around 5,800 people were arrested during the days of unrest. The situation has now stabilized in all regions of the country. The protests began a week ago when the government drastically increased prices for LPG. They expanded into rallies against the authoritarian leadership of the Central Asian country. Dozens of people were killed and numerous injured.
