Video: New fighting with dead people in the South Caucasus

STORY: The decades-long conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia has recently turned violent again. Both neighboring countries blamed each other for the renewed fighting in the border area on Tuesday night. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke in the capital Yerevan. “As of now, according to the Ministry of Defence, at least 49 soldiers have been killed in action. But unfortunately that will not be the final number.” He said Azerbaijan had attacked Armenian settlements because it did not want to negotiate the status of the Caucasus region of Nagorno-Karabakh. “Azerbaijan is trying to claim that these actions were in response to provocation from the Armenian side. But we can assure that this information is absolutely false and has nothing to do with reality.” Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry, on the other hand, said several positions of its armed forces had been shelled by the Armenian army. The country also acknowledged “personnel losses”. The United States, the European Union and Armenia’s ally Russia expressed concern and called for an immediate halt to hostilities. Moscow said it was trying to contribute to de-escalation in the border region. Turkey, which is one of Azerbaijan’s supporters, called on Armenia to refrain from provocations.
