Video: Nepotism? Boris Johnson is said to have brought father into play for knighthood

STORY: The resemblance to his son is unmistakable: Stanley Johnson, father of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. As the newspaper The Times reports, the son proposed his own father for knighthood. Boris Johnson, as the outgoing Prime Minister, had the opportunity to submit a list of nominations for the honor. The newspaper suspects nepotism. The Times reported that Johnson named up to 100 names for awards. His predecessors Theresa May and David Cameron each submitted about 60 names. The newspaper did not report for what services Johnson proposed his father. Johnson’s father is a former Member of the European Parliament, author and television personality. Last year – after his son pushed ahead with Brexit – he had taken on French citizenship. A spokesman for the former prime minister declined to comment. All outgoing British heads of government have the right to draw up a list of so-called “resignation honors”, in which knighthoods and other titles are awarded. A knighthood increases a person’s standing in public and gives the wearer the title of “sir” or “lady”.
