Mourning the ex-US Secretary of State Albright

STORY: Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is dead. She died at the age of 84. Her family said in a statement that she died of cancer. Albright had been involved with the US Democrats since the 1970s. During Jimmy Carter’s presidency, she worked in the White House. Albright became the US government’s ambassador to New York under President Bill Clinton. She later became the first woman to head the State Department in Washington from 1997 to 2001. In the process, the Democrat, originally from Eastern Europe whose family had once immigrated to the United States, became a leading voice in US foreign policy in the 20th century. Clinton was concerned after the politician’s death. Albright was one of the best diplomats, a brilliant professor and an “extraordinary person,” said the former US President. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also shared her dismay. “With poise, clarity and courage, Madeleine Albright was the first US Secretary of State to stand up for freedom and the strength of democracies,” Baerbock wrote on Twitter. A day before the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, Albright had sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin in the New York Times. If Mr. Putin feels cornered, he can only blame himself. Ukraine has a right to its sovereignty regardless of who its neighbors are, she wrote in a guest post.
