Mexicans vote for President Lopez Obrador



STORY: In Mexico, voters overwhelmingly voted in a referendum to keep President López Obrador in office. According to preliminary information from the national electoral authority, just over 90 percent voted for the head of state to exercise his six-year mandate in full until 2024. Participation, however, was very low at around 18 percent. The left-leaning president initiated the referendum himself and praised it as democratic. Most of the opposition had called for a boycott. Critics portrayed the vote as taxpayer-funded propaganda for the popular López Obrador in the polls and a distraction from his mistakes. Ahead of the referendum, López Obrador and his party had accused the electoral commission of being anti-plebiscite and not promoting the plebiscite enough .
