Metsola new President of the European Parliament
She was considered the favorite and she was elected: Roberta Metsola is the new President of the European Parliament. The chamber elected the Christian Democratic Maltese in Strasbourg in the first ballot – and on the day of her 43rd birthday. “Those who seek to undermine democracy, the rule of law, freedom of speech and fundamental rights, those who attack women, who seek to deny LGBTIQ people their rights, they know our House will never allow that.” Europe is back, Europe is the future, she added. Metsola succeeds the recently deceased Italian David Sassoli. She had held the office of first vice-president of Parliament since the end of 2020. She is the third woman to hold this high office in the EU and the first in around twenty years.
