Messe Frankfurt becomes the initial reception center

STORY: For most war refugees from the Ukraine, Berlin Central Station is only a first stop in Germany. Many travel directly from here to other cities in the Federal Republic. For example, a large volume is also expected in Frankfurt am Main, on Friday an initial supply center was put into operation on the exhibition grounds. On the one hand, Frankfurt is considered a transport hub, but it also has a large Ukrainian community and a Jewish community. All reasons to adjust to those seeking protection now, explains Elke Voitl, head of the social affairs department. “I can’t tell you how many people we are preparing for or how many people will come. But what is certain is that we are doing everything we can to prepare everything and actually be prepared for large rushes.” Thomas Müller-Witte, Managing Director of ASB Frankfurt: “The exhibition center has a good infrastructure of sanitary facilities, which is reinforced by shower containers, for example. And we have to…, well, we’ve now put in place a fast infrastructure, and if something is missing, we have to adjust it. And if we notice that the number of toilets is not enough, then we just have to bring more mobile toilets here, and we will act relatively quickly and flexibly according to the needs.” In a first step, 2,000 people will receive food, shelter and medical care here.
